The construction of the airport was ordered by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in 1959. Soon after the construction of airport, and development in international trade and commercial activities, congestion started in the airport. In order to solve the problem of ongoing congestion in the airport, the government in Dubai has planned out to build Al Maktoum International Airport (Dubai World Central International Airport), a new 140 km2 (54 sq mi) airport which will complement Dubai International Airport.
